Methi pithla - Steam Method
The steam method for making methi pithla is healthier and makes the dish fluffier and easier to digest. Methi Pithla is a traditional Maharashtrian dish made with gram flour (besan) and fresh fenugreek leaves (methi). It’s simple, nutritious, and delicious, often paired with bhakri, roti, or rice.
Here’s how you can prepare it:
Ingredients:- 2 cups fresh methi leaves (finely chopped)
- 1 cup besan (gram flour)
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1/2 tsp red chili powder (optional)
- 1-2 green chilies
- 1-2 cloves garlic
- 1 onion
- 1/4 tsp asafoetida (hing)
- 1 tsp sugar (optional)
- 1 tsp oil (for greasing)
- Salt to taste
1. Prepare the steamer mixture:
- Wash and chop methi leaves.
- In a bowl, mix chopped methi leaves, besan, turmeric powder, and salt.
- Grease a steel plate or steaming tray with oil.
- Heat a steamer with water. Bring it to a boil.
- Add the mixture into the greased tray and place it in the steamer.
- Steam on medium heat for 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool and keep aside.

- Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
- Add chopped garlic, green chilies, and onion SautƩ for a few seconds until aromatic.
- Add turmeric powder, salt and steamed methi besan mixture. Cook for another 2-3 minutes.

6. Garnish and Serve:
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
- Serve hot with bhakri, chapati, or steamed rice.
