Vatanyachi rassa bhaji (Green peas recipe)
Vatanyachi rassa bhaji also known as Matar (Green Peas) Curry, a popular Indian dish often served with rice or Indian breads like chapati, rice or bhakri.
Here’s a simple recipe for Vatanyachi rassa bhaji:
Ingredients:For the rassa (gravy):
- 1 cup green peas (fresh or frozen)
- 2 medium onions (finely chopped)
- 2 medium tomatoes (pureed)
- 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
- 2 green chilies (slit)
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 pinch asafoetida (hing)
- 8-10 curry leaves
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
- 1 teaspoon goda masala (or garam masala)
- 2 tablespoons roasted peanut powder
- ½ teaspoon coriander powder
- Salt to taste
- 1 cup water (adjust as needed)
- Fresh coriander leaves (for garnish)
Instructions:
1. Tempering:
- Heat oil in a pan or pressure cooker
- Add mustard seeds, methi seeds, and cumin seeds. Let them splutter.
- Add asafoetida (hing), curry leaves, and green chilies. SautƩ until aromatic.
- Add chopped garlic, chopped onions and sautƩ until they turn golden brown.
- Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, salt and goda masala, Mix well.
- Add chopped tomato, stir well and cook until the oil separates from the masala.
- Add green peas, and add water to adjust the consistency of the gravy, mix.
- Close the lid of the pressure cooker cook on high heat until the first whistle, then reduce the heat to low and let it cook for 2-3 whistle. Turn off the heat and let the pressure release naturally.
- Open the cooker, Add roasted peanut powder to the peas masala gravy and mix well. This will give the gravy a rich, thick texture.
- Simmer for another 2-3 minutes to blend the flavors.
- Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves and turn off the heat.
