Sadha Varan bhaat - Maharashtrian dish
Sadha Varan Bhaat (without tempering) is a traditional Maharashtrian dish, often prepared during festive occasions. It's a simple yet flavorful combination of cooked lentils (dal) and rice.
Here’s a basic recipe to make Sadha Varan Bhaat:
Ingredients:For Varan (Lentil Curry):
- 1 cup mix dal (toor dal and moong dal)
- 2-3 cups water
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 1 tablespoon Jaggery powder
- 1 tablespoon ghee (clarified butter)
- A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
- lemon, for serving (optional)
- 1 cup rice
- 2 cups water
- Salt to taste
Preparing the Varan:
1. Wash and Cook Dal:
- Rinse the dal thoroughly in water, and soak for 30 minutes.
- In a pressure cooker, add the soaked dal, water, turmeric powder, hing( Asafoetida) and a little salt.
- Cook until the dal is soft and well-cooked.
- Once the dal is cooked, mash it lightly.
- Add cooked dal into the pan, If it's too thick, you can add a little more water to get the desired consistency. adjust salt to taste
- Add jaggery powder, mix well.
- Bring the dal to a boil and simmer for a few more minutes.
Preparing the Bhaat:
1. Wash and Cook Rice:
- Rinse the rice thoroughly in water.
- In a pot, add the rice, water, and salt.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it cook until the rice is done (about 15-20 minutes).
