Simple Rice recipe - Cooking at home


Rice is a cereal grain, staple food for over half of the worlds's human population particularly in Asia.

Utensils used for making rice:

1. Rice Cooker: An electric appliance specifically designed for cooking rice. It simplifies the process and often includes features like automatic shut-off.

2. Saucepan or Pot: A basic pot with a lid, commonly used for cooking rice on the stovetop.

3. Measuring Cup: Used to measure the rice and water ratio accurately.

4. Rice Spoon: A utensil with a flat surface, designed for fluffing and serving rice without crushing the grains.

5. Strainer or Colander: Used for rinsing rice before cooking to remove excess starch.

6. Fork or Spatula: Used for fluffing cooked rice and mixing in other ingredients if making a seasoned or flavored rice dish.

7. Kitchen Timer: Helpful for ensuring rice is cooked for the correct amount of time.

8. Pot Holder or Oven Mitt: Used for handling hot pots or lids when cooking rice on the stovetop.

Simple rice recipe:


Ingredients:
  • 1cup of rice (white rice)
  • 2cups of water
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

Cooking rice on the stove is simple if you follow these steps:


1. Measure the Rice and Water:
  • For white rice, use a 1:2 ratio of rice to water (e.g., 1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water).
  • For brown rice, use a 1:2.5 ratio (e.g., 1 cup of rice to 2.5 cups of water).

2. Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This helps remove excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming too sticky.

3. In a pot Add the rinsed rice, water and salt, bring the water to a boil.

4. Reduce the heat to low, cook on low heat for about 10 minutes.

5. Cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 4-5 minutes.
(White rice: 15-18 minutes, Brown rice: 40-45 minutes), or until the rice is tender and the water is absorbed.

5. After the cooking time is complete, turn off the heat and let the rice sit, covered, for 5-10 minutes to allow it to steam and become fluffy. Once cooked, fluff the rice with a fork and serve hot.
