Kitchen Safety - Cooking at home

Kitchen safety needs to be a top priority to prevent accidents and injuries. It involves proper handling of sharp objects, hot surfaces, and electrical appliances, as well as practicing good hygiene and cleanliness to avoid contamination.

Kitchen safety tips:

1. Handwashing: Wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling food, after using the restroom, after touching pets, and after handling garbage.

2. Knife Safety: Always use a cutting board when chopping or slicing food, and make sure it's stable to prevent slipping. Keep your fingers away from the blade and use a claw grip to hold the food steady while cutting.

3. Avoid loose clothing: Wear fitted clothing to reduce the risk of it catching fire or getting caught in appliances

4. Supervision: Never leave the kitchen while cooking, especially if you have pots or pans on the stove or food in the oven. If you must leave, turn off the heat or set a timer to remind you to check on the food.

5. Flammable Objects: Keep flammable items like oven mitts, dish towels, and curtains away from the stove while cooking. Install a fire extinguisher in or near the kitchen in case of emergencies.

6. Spill Cleanup: Clean up spills immediately to prevent slips and falls. Use a non-slip mat near the sink and stove to provide traction if spills occur.

7. Chemical Storage: Store cleaning products and chemicals in their original containers in a locked cabinet or high shelf, out of reach of children and pets. Keep them away from food and cooking areas to avoid accidental ingestion or contamination.

8. Hot Oil Safety: When frying food, use a deep fryer with a thermostat to control the temperature of the oil. Never overfill the fryer, and lower food into the oil slowly to prevent splattering. If oil catches fire, cover the pot with a metal lid or use a fire extinguisher designated for grease fires.

9. Ventilation: Install a range hood or exhaust fan above the stove to remove smoke, steam, and cooking odors from the kitchen. Keep the hood or fan clean and in good working condition to maintain proper ventilation.

10. Educate family members: Ensure everyone in the household knows basic kitchen safety rules and procedures.
